Filomena (Phyllis) Dragosz (1924-2017)
Filomena (Nakryjko) Dragosz, 92, of Utica, NY, joined the Lord on Monday, February 13, 2017. Filomena was born in 1924 in Dobrotwir, Kamianka Stromilowa, Ukraine, the daughter of the late Franczieszka Majik and Pawel Nakryjko. She was also predeceased by her brother Joseph Majik in Poland, and her beloved daughter in-law Leonora (Bissett) Dragosz.
During World War II, at age 15, she was brought to work in Karlsruhe, and Ettlingen, Germany. In 1945 she was united in blessed marriage in Ettlingen Germany, to her late husband of 60 years Walter Dragosz, who passed away in February 2005. They immigrated to the United States in 1949 and settled in Utica, NY where they raised their family and gained their citizenship. An active member of St. Volodymyr the Great Ukrainian Catholic Church she was involved in many church activities and organizations including the Mothers Club of the Ukrainian-American Youth Association, Ukrainian National Women's League, the Church Fundraising Committee for the building of the new church and auditorium, the annual church festival, church Bingo, and the weekly pierogi making group. Filomena worked for many years as a waitress at various Utica restaurants, General Electric, Miele Manufacturing and Joseph & Feiss.
Filomena was a hard-working, loving, and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She cherished the special times spent with her family and is survived by her sons Zenon Dragosz, and his wife Mary, of Leesburg, VA, George Dragosz of Utica, NY, her granddaughter Sara Dragosz of Lubbock, TX, and nieces and nephews in Poland. She loved gardening, cooking for her family, especially at Holidays, her special friends, the Spring and Summer months, her treadmill which she used daily, and watching the News, Wheel of Fortune, and Lawrence Welk reruns.
Calling hours are from 4:00-7:00 PM on Friday, February 17, 2017, at the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams and Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Road, New Hartford, NY with Parastas services held at 7:00 PM. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 18, 2017, from St. Volodymyr the Great Ukrainian Catholic Church, 4 Cottage Place, Utica, NY at 10:00 AM. Interment will be at the church cemetery on Woods Road, Whitesboro, NY.
In lieu of flowers, Filomena asked that donations be made in her memory to St. Volodymyr the Great Ukrainian Catholic Church.
