Robert L. Gifford 1936-2017
Whitesboro, NY / The Villages, FL
Robert L. Gifford died on April 3, 2017, of complications caused when he tripped and fell while playing Bocce in The Villages, FL.
Bob was born March 30, 1936, the oldest of seven children of Malcolm E. and Helen A. (Smart) Gifford. He was raised in Marcy and Whitesboro, NY. He graduated from Whitesboro Central School, class of 1953. In November 1953, Bob joined the Army, serving in Korea. He was discharged in September 1956, and then entered SUNY Brockport to pursue his Bachelor's degree. After graduation he taught and coached sports at Holland Patent, the Whitesboro School system, and New York Mills. He then earned his Master's degree from SUNY Oswego, and served in guidance and counseling, and later as an administrator for the Clinton School District from 1968 until retirement in 1991.
Bob married the love of his life Carole Anne Martin in February 1965. She also was a teacher. They were married 36 years until her death in June 2001.
In September 2003, Bob married Dona Schaub (who also was widowed in 2001, after a 40 year marriage). Many of their days were spent watching his Standard Bread Horses train and prepare for upcoming races. Traveling around New York State to watch them compete and race was great fun and exciting.
Bob was an avid golfer and a member of the Skenandoa Country Club in Clinton, NY for many years. He like playing reciprocals at different courses around the state and especially enjoyed Men's Day at the club. He loved playing at the course and then having dinner with the guys.
On weekends, depending on the season, he would watch the Oakland A's, the NY Giants football team, or Syracuse University basketball.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, his wife Carole Ann, his brother Malcolm (Tim) and most recently his brother Jon (Jack).
Survivors include his wife Dona Schaub-Gifford, two sisters, Anne G. Gifford and Marion Carol (Brian) Donohoe, two brothers, Walter Scott Gifford and William S. (Mary) Gifford; also two nieces, two nephews, and their nine children.
