Rose Ellen Jones lived a long, full life and passed away peacefully at her home of 60 years on March 11, 2017. She was born June 21, 1919, to Welsh immigrant parents Hugh and Elizabeth Williams. The middle of five children, Rose grew up on the family farm in Unadilla Forks, and attended the former Lenoardsville High School where she was a member of the girls' basketball team.
Rose married Griffith Vaughan Jones, himself a Welsh immigrant, in 1954, and they had a special and loving marriage until his death in 2002. Rose and Vaughan were active members of the Moriah Presbyterian Church (now Westminster Moriah Olivet), and the St. David's Society of Utica, never missing a Gymanfa Ganu (Welsh Hymn Sing). Rose enjoyed her summers at Cedar Lake, taking up golf in her 50s. She worked for many years with the McHarris family in their gift shop business, always holding a special fondness for the entire family. She was a legendary baker, known for her cream puffs, pies, and Welsh tea cakes.
Rose was preceded in death by her parents; siblings Merwin, George, Alfred, and Elizabeth; and her husband Vaughan. She is survived by her son, Gwynn (Rome); granddaughters Emily Ann (Merrimack, New Hampshire) and Avery Rose (Rome); a sister-in-law Alma Williams of Ilion, and many nieces, nephews, and their children—all of whom she adored. She also leaves many special friends, including Ellen Williams, Roger & Pat Williams, as well as her dear friends in both the Unadilla Forks and greater Welsh community.
A memorial celebration of Rose's life will be held on Saturday, May 20st at 1:00pm at Westminster Moriah Olivet Church, 714 Washington Street, Utica. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome contributions to the St. David's Society of Utica Scholarship Fund c/o Cindy Gilbert, 3 Woodstock Court, New Hartford NY 13413.
Arrangements are with the Dimbleby, Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, New Hartford.
